BIR Teams Up with Northwestern University on Engineering Project

When: April 10, 2008
Where: BIR

Four Northwestern engineering students will team-up with BIR to create a CNC (Computer Numerical Control, often referred to as Computerized Manufacturing) workstation that is ergonomically designed to accommodate CNC programmers with physical disabilities. BIR's CNC Program Coordinator, Chris Carstens, says the underlying goal of the project is to enhance the working environment of all CNC programmers. Typically, a CNC programmer stands in front of a large computer console and types in numerical directions for the machine to follow. The Northwestern students will be exploring ways to make CNC programming less restrictive to people with ambulatory disabilities.
