Program Description

BIR’s English Language Program helps students acquire the oral fluency and written communication skills necessary to succeed in academics, the workplace, and everyday life. Our classes are diverse, with students from all around the world, and a student to teacher ratio of 15:1. All of our instructors are highly trained professionals with advanced degreees in linguistics, education, or a related field.

Lectures

When entering the program, students are assessed and placed in the appropriate level, ranging from absolute beginner to advanced. Each seven-week course incorporates all aspects of language acquisition (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). However, it focuses especially on one skill type. Conversation addresses listening and speaking. Reading helps students develop vital reading skills. Writing teaches composition from sentence to essay. Vocabulary development and grammar are addressed across all classes and levels. Upon completion of the program, students will have a sound command of formal and colloquial English and be prepared for university studies, professional careers, and daily life.

Workshops

The lectures are complemented by workshops that allow you to increase your language abilities. There are over 70 workshops to choose from every 7 weeks. Some workshops are skills-based, addressing such topics as grammar, vocabulary, or idioms. This allows students to work on a specific aspect of language-learning. Other workshops are content-based and include such topics as: Hollywood Musicals, The History of Chicago, Three Centuries of Immigration in America, National Geographic Wildlife, Yoga and Meditation, and many other fascinating topics.

Tutoring

The third component of the BIR’s English program is one-on-one, small group, and peer tutoring. Tutoring adds value to your education by offering more personal attention, feedback, and choices to learn what you want. Come before or after class, on your day off, mornings or evenings, weekdays or weekends. Work on pronunciation, prepare for major tests, nail down complex grammar structures, start using idioms, or just come to chat and sharpen your communication skills. There are also sessions on study skills and memorization techniques. Tutoring sessions take place at BIR’s Learning Center where you can find a quite place to study, help with homework, and a collection of textbooks and materials. Tutoring is available on a drop-in basis and by appointments.
