Reading (TEP 050)
Students learn how to read passages for comprehension, meaning, and detail, while developing skills in skimming and scanning, understanding vocabulary in context, determining purpose, paraphrasing, and recognizing coherence. Students will also learn note-taking techniques to help summarize, categorize, and distinguish between major and minor points.
Listening (TEP 051)
Students learn how to actively listen to passages and take notes on essential information while listening. They learn how to listen for details, categorize information, and determine the speaker’s purpose and attitude without being distracted by the speaker’s style.
Speaking (TEP 052)
Students learn how to develop a topic and support their position with limited preparation time. They learn how to connect ideas from two sources (reading and listening) and respond orally to prompts regarding what they read and heard. In addition, students learn how to speak clearly and coherently through class exercises and pronunciation drills.
Writing (TEP 053)
Students learn how to respond to two writing tasks: an integrated task, which tests their ability to connect ideas from two sources (reading and listening) and answer a question about what was read and hear, and an independent essay supporting an opinion or argument about a topic. Students learn how to create outlines, organize ideas, and write well-developed responses to the prompts.
Overall (TEP 054)
Students review strategies for all four sections of the TOEFL iBT test: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. They take iBT simulated practice tests and experience all aspects of the TOEFL test in the exact setting and location as the actual TOEFL exam. In addition, students will learn test day tips to help achieve the best results.
Introduction to Computers (CIT 090)
Students are taught skills in keyboarding, alpha and numerical
data entry, editing and presentation of text. Hand placement,
accuracy, and speed using the touch method are the focus. Students
will have various keyboarding and 10-key exercises and text
presentation drills.
